ABOUT
In The Room is an independently run magazine focused around the local but also greater modern New York DIY scene. Currently, In The Room has no social media presence. We are passionate about preserving the integrity of DIY, and want to communicate how social media can threaten this integrity. There has been less of a desire to show up to shows in person, and an increasing reliance on the internet for connection to the subculture. Scenes like this are commonly a place people go to if they feel disengaged from more conventional social spaces. This only proves the importance of showing up in person and being with others you feel truly unified with in person. Having this subculture exist more offline feels unsustainable until a group finally showcases how it is possible to embrace more traditional forms of community building in a modern digital age.
Our first print magazine will be twenty-nine pages with 350 additions. We cover as much as we can of what is currently taking place in modern day NYC DIY, and print simply won't be able to cover all of it. As a result of this, we also will cover the scene through online interviews and blog style posts on our personal website. In The Room is centered on community, and we try to heed the call of any ideas or ambitions proposed to us while also looking to creative individuals who are interested in making designs for the magazine. This widens the scope of what we can try to do. We hope to create more merchandise, videos, articles, and art through the work of our team and surrounding scene/community.
Our goal is to encourage more young creatives in local DIY scenes across the country to feel inspired by the possibility of creating connections through art using online spaces that don't directly participate in attention capital. As we continue the magazine we are focused on being able to promote an alternate way of approaching art by being considerate of the tools at your disposal and how you distribute work. By making this magazine, we will try to encourage people to be more aware of the online platforms they exist in, and be more considerate of the way they consume media and products in their everyday life. Ultimately, In The Room strives to promote creating and enjoying art in a more considerate and sustainable way.
